Unalaska or Dutch Harbor?

Packed Up for the Night

Unalaska or Dutch Harbor, Alaska is an enigma!  I loved this rugged fishing village on the coasts of both Unalaska and Amaknak Islands, connected by a bridge called “the Bridge to the Other Side”.  The island and the town are both named Unalaska. There is a body of water called Dutch Harbor and many people refer to the town as Dutch Harbor or simply Dutch. Technically, there is no town named Dutch Harbor.  Have I confused you???

Sea Gulls

Sea Gulls

They’re not always boisterous and annoying.  When they’re absent from the beach, I miss their squawks, their begging for food and I miss seeing their synchronized flights over the ocean.  And then they rest quietly on the sand in a giant group, all facing in the same direction.  I like that; but it doesn’t last long.

Friday Night

Friday Night

What better spot to sit and reflect (or not) at the end of the week?  Add a glass of wine, a beautiful sunset, and of course, just the sounds of the wading birds.

Sharing the boardwalk at the marina on Amelia Island.
I’m pretty sure I missed the “Yield” sign!

Cape Horn, Chile

Cape Horn

Cold, desolate and captivating!  We were awake before dawn to capture the sights of Cape Horn as we traversed the tip of the South American continent.

Come Stay Awhile

The allure of Elizabeth Point Lodge on Fernandina Beach is that it beckons you, especially from the waterfront, to come stay awhile. I always look forward to photographing this solitary beauty!

Twilight at the Marina

The stillness at the marina on Christmas Eve was captivating.  No wind, no boats, no footsteps; just the rightful residents paddling through the marina at sunset.  The scene left me breathless and thankful . . .
